Transportation

Nishnawbe Aski Nation is connected year-round by provincial highways as well as provincially owned and operated remote airports. Seasonally constructed winter roads provide an additional and necessary transportation option for many NAN member First Nations. Together, this transportation network is critical for community well-being, emergency response, supply chain stability, and year-round connectivity.

Funding and infrastructure gaps, climate change, regulatory pressures, and jurisdictional overlap between the federal and provincial governments create significant transportation challenges throughout NAN Territory.

Within the Housing and Infrastructure Department, the Transportation File advocates for safe, reliable access for NAN member First Nations. This work supports coordination between First Nations, federal and provincial partners and technical experts. Key priorities include supporting climate adaptation and advancing safe, reliable transportation solutions that focus on the needs of First Nations. These efforts strengthen essential links that support access to health services, food security, housing, and economic participation across the region.
