NAN Grand Chief Extends Congratulations to Peawanuck on 40th Anniversary Commemoration

THUNDER BAY, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, on behalf of the Executive Council, extends heartfelt congratulations to the people of Peawanuck First Nation as they gather this week to mark the 40th anniversary of their community’s relocation from Winisk.

“Forty years ago, the people of Winisk experienced an unimaginable tragedy when a devastating flood claimed the lives of Margaret Chookomolin (Wabano) and Elder John Crow and forced families to leave their homes. In the face of tremendous loss, the community demonstrated extraordinary strength, courage and determination by rebuilding on higher ground. The community that emerged, Peawanuck, stands today as a symbol of resilience, hope and renewal.

As you gather to remember those who were lost, honour the survivors, and celebrate 40 years of Peawanuck, we join you in recognizing the unwavering spirit of your people. The sharing of stories, cultural teachings, and time spent with family and loved ones are powerful reminders of our history, our identity, and the strength that continues to carry our communities forward.

Our thoughts are with the people of Peawanuck during this important commemoration. These moments are sacred and remind us of who we are and where we come from.

Miigwetch to the Chief Joey Hunter, his Council, and all those who have worked so hard to organize this commemoration. And to the people of Peawanuck, past and present — Chi-Miigwech for your strength and your enduring spirit.”

The remote community of Winisk was devastated by a sudden flood from an ice jam on the Winisk River on May 16, 1986. Floodwater washed away all buildings and many residents were stranded for days before assistance arrived. Tragically, two people lost their lives. The community was later rebuilt on higher ground approximately 30 kilometres up-river at Peawanuck.
