1. Mental Health and Addictions – Generations of historical trauma, socio-economic obstacles, cultural disconnection, limited access to services, and stigma have left deep mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional scars. To heal, we must take a holistic approach—nurturing community resilience, revitalizing cultural ties and identity, enhancing service accessibility, and tackling root causes of health disparities.
2. Emergency Medical Response – Due to the remoteness of many NAN communities, limited healthcare infrastructure, and higher rates of health disparities, access to emergency medical response is a critical priority for all communities of NAN. Cultural considerations and the need for culturally sensitive responses further underscore the importance of tailored emergency services. To address this priority need, collaborative efforts are essential to improve infrastructure, training, and coordination of emergency services, ensuring that NAN communities receive timely and culturally appropriate care during health crises.
3. Dialysis – The disproportionately high prevalence of chronic kidney disease and limited access to healthcare services in remote and isolated regions, access to dialysis remains high priority for NAN communities. Individuals with end-stage renal disease face significant challenges in accessing life-saving dialysis treatment, impacting their quality of life and life expectancy. Cultural considerations and the principles of health equity and social justice underscore the importance of providing culturally safe and respectful dialysis care. Addressing this priority need requires comprehensive strategies that prioritize investment in healthcare infrastructure, improved access to specialized services, and addressing underlying health disparities.
4. Public Health – Public health remains a critical and immediate priority due to persistent health disparities, chronic health conditions, infectious diseases, environmental health risks, and the importance of culturally relevant interventions for NAN First Nations. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive public health initiatives that prioritize community engagement, health equity, and culturally safe practices. By investing in healthcare infrastructure, prevention programs, and community-led initiatives, we can improve health outcomes and promote well-being for all members of NAN communities.
