NAN Mourns Passing of Elder Abraham Metatawabin of Fort Albany First Nation

THUNDER BAY, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN)’s Executive Council expresses heartfelt condolences following the passing of former Fort Albany First Nation Chief, NAN Elder, and Canadian Ranger Abraham Metatawabin:

“On behalf of Nishnawbe Aski Nation we send our love and prayers to Abraham’s family and the entire community of Fort Albany First Nation. Abraham was a long-serving leader who was respected for his wisdom and knowledge of the land.

Abraham dedicated his life to serving his community and was apart of the 3rd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group in Fort Albany First Nation. His service and commitment to the Canadian Armed Forces was recognized with awards for many accomplishments, including the Special Service Medal.

His remarkable life will be remembered fondly by all those who knew him, including his large family, and we will miss his presence at our Chiefs Assemblies.

It is especially sad that we are not able to join with his community to grieve at this time. We will join with Abraham’s family and friends in prayer and will do anything we can to comfort them.”

At 104 years of age at his passing, Abraham was the longest serving Canadian Ranger in Ontario.

In 2003, Abraham was awarded his Canadian Forces’ Decoration (CD) and in 2014, Abraham was presented the first clasp to his CD. He is the first Ranger in Ontario to receive a clasp.

The CD is awarded to those who have served 12 years, in the Armed Forces and the clasp represents an additional 10 years of service.

Details on funeral services have yet to be announced. We ask everyone to keep those who are mourning in their prayers in the difficult days ahead.
