NAN Women’s Council Celebrates National Chief Archibald as Trailblazer for Indigenous Women

THUNDER BAY, ON: The Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Women’s Council celebrates Assembly of First Nations National Chief RoseAnne Archibald, of Taykwa Tagamou Nation, as trailblazer for Indigenous women and girls:

“The NAN Women’s Council wish to extend our joyous and heartfelt congratulations to RoseAnne Archibald, the Kitche ogimakanikwe, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

National Chief Archibald was the first woman to be elected as a Deputy Grand Chief at Nishnawbe Aski Nation. During National Chief Archibald’s tenure as Deputy Grand Chief, her advocacy and leadership was pivotal in the creation of the NAN Women’s Council.

National Chief’s perseverance to advocate for representation of women is constant. She continues to inspire us with her leadership. She is a role model for women, girls and all Indigenous Peoples who aspire to be. This historic shift in leadership will blaze a trail for Indigenous women and girls.

We add our strength to hers, as she takes to task all issues that impact us at all levels of government, especially on moving forward on the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

We support you. We lift you up. We honour you. Ninanaskamon, kisahkeetin.”

The NAN Women’s Council represents women and families in the governance of NAN and ensures that women’s issues, family issues, concerns, priorities, and needs are identified and addressed.
