Oshkaatisak Council Reaffirms Commitment to Equity, Respect, and Belonging during Pride Month
The Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Oshkaatisak (All Young People’s) Council has released the following statement in celebration of Pride Month:
“As we recognize Pride Month, the Oshkaatisak Council stands in solidarity with Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and gender-diverse people across Nishnawbe Aski territory and beyond.
Pride Month is a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and communities. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing work needed to create safe, inclusive, and welcoming spaces where everyone can live authentically.
For many Indigenous Nations, including our own, diversity in gender identities and sexual orientations has long existed within our cultures, teachings, and communities. Two-Spirit people have historically held important roles and continue to be valued members of our Nations. We acknowledge the impacts of colonization, discrimination, and systemic barriers that have affected Indigenous 2SLGBTQIA+ people and reaffirm our commitment to supporting equity, respect, and belonging for all.
This commitment is also reflected in the Oshkaatisak Council’s Terms of Reference, which require that at least one Council member identify as Two-Spirit. By ensuring Two-Spirit representation within our leadership structure, we recognize the importance of diverse perspectives and lived experiences in guiding the Council’s work and supporting Indigenous youth across Nishnawbe Aski territory.
The Oshkaatisak Council is committed to fostering environments where Indigenous youth can thrive, be proud of who they are, and feel supported in expressing their identities. We celebrate the leadership, courage, and voices of Two-Spirit and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth who are helping to build stronger and more inclusive communities for future generations.
This Pride Month, we encourage everyone to stand together in the spirit of acceptance, kindness, and understanding. By embracing diversity and uplifting one another, we strengthen our Nations and create a future where all people are respected, valued, and empowered.”
Happy Pride Month!
