Thunder Bay Leaders Set a Collaborative Path Forward to Address Homelessness
Leaders from Anemki Wajiw (Fort William First Nation), Nishnawbe Aski Nation, and the City of Thunder Bay met today to strengthen dialogue and collaboration in response to the ongoing crisis related to homelessness.
The loss of life in the community and ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous peoples were acknowledged, and all agreed that there are gaps in current approaches and available resources. The discussion focused on the importance of shared understanding, respectful relationships, working together to advocate for additional resources and supports, and the importance of achieving tangible outcomes.
“We come together today with open hearts and open minds,” said Chief Solomon of Anemki Wajiw (Fort William First Nation). “We do not have all the answers, but too many people are dying for us to continue working in isolation. This dialogue is an important first step, and it gives us an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in a new way—one that is collaborative, honest, and grounded in good relationships.”
Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler expressed support for collaboration on advancing long-term solutions but emphasized the need for urgent action. “As leaders, we need to show that we are committed to providing immediate supports to our most vulnerable members, while we work together to establish long-term solutions.”
“We recognize there is an urgency to the issue,” said Mayor Ken Boshcoff. “We are committed to listening, learning and collective action. This is a complex issue that no single organization can solve. Our focus must be on working together and seeking the support our community needs.”
Throughout the meeting, leaders discussed a range of potential approaches to guide future decision‑making and advocacy. All agreed that the humanitarian crisis on homelessness is real and collaborative effort is required. Leaders committed to continuing this dialogue and working together to seek the resources and system‑level changes needed to close existing gaps. City Administration will bring a full report to Council for their consideration.
Further information will be provided as all parties work through this unacceptable situation with both immediate and longer-term initiatives.
