Water Initiatives

Leaders, Elders, youth and water experts came together to discuss the ongoing lack of safe, reliable drinking water. The Summit was a space to talk openly about the challenges NAN communities face and to plan a better path forward.

Honouring water as sacred:

The discussion is grounded in ceremony and teachings, recognizing water as sacred and reminding us of our responsibility to protect it for future generations.

Bill C 61 and water governance:

Panelists explain the proposed First Nations Clean Water Act and why NAN supports stronger long term funding and First Nations led regulations for water.

The video also dives into each of the Five Key Recommendations from the Summit:

  • Initiate a Water Declaration Process
  • Support NAN communities in developing source Water Protection Plans
  • Explore the creation of a regional water authority or authorities
  • Begin drafting First Nations-led water management regulations
  • Build a strong, sustainable water and wastewater operations workforce.

Looking ahead to the future:

The panel closes by sharing hope for unity, self-determination and a future where all NAN communities have access to safe, clean and reliable water.

This discussion reminds us that the Water Summit was the start of a much needed conversation, not the end.
